Aryna Sabalenka’s Cincinnati Campaign Ends in Stunning Upset as Sara Bejlek Advances
Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one and a consistent force at the WTA 1000 Cincinnati tournament since 2022, suffered a shocking defeat in the round of 16, bowing out to the 20-year-old Czech sensation Sara Bejlek. Sabalenka, who had reached at least the quarterfinals in every Cincinnati edition since 2022, was unable to maintain her dominance despite holding a break lead twice in the opening set. The first set slipped away in a tense tiebreak, with Bejlek edging it 9-7 to seize momentum.
In the second set, Sabalenka surged ahead 4-1 after breaking early, but from that point on, it was Bejlek who orchestrated a remarkable comeback to close out the set 6-4, securing a straight-sets victory. Bejlek’s fearless performance now sets up a quarterfinal clash with Madison Keys, who dispatched China’s Xiyu Wang 7-6, 6-4.
Meanwhile, American star Coco Gauff continued her strong run with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 win over Czech Marie Bouzkova. Other U.S. contenders Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova also advanced; Pegula outlasted Sorana Cirstea 7-5 in a three-set battle, while Anisimova overpowered Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova 6-1, 6-4. Conversely, young Russian prospect Mirra Andreeva was eliminated after a three-set loss to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, who rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Elena Rybakina’s path to number one status at Cincinnati has opened wide following Sabalenka’s exit. The Kazakh star dispatched Diana Shnaider in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, and now faces a pivotal quarterfinal showdown against reigning champion Iga Swiatek. The other quarterfinal matchups will feature Gauff versus Kostyuk and Anisimova taking on Pegula.
