Taylor Fritz, the number one American tennis player and currently ranked eighth in the world, is facing fierce criticism for continuing his tournament schedule while dealing with persistent pain. Former WTA player Coco Vandeweghe did not hesitate to label his decision as “stupid,” raising concerns about his long-term health.
Currently shining at the Delray Beach Open, where he has already claimed victory in 2023 and 2024, Fritz is showing remarkable performance, having advanced to the quarter-finals after a convincing win over young Rafael Jodar with scores of 7-6(4), 6-4. However, this tournament comes right after an intense campaign at the Dallas Open, where, despite having three championship points, he ended up losing to compatriot Ben Shelton. During that competition, Fritz showed serious signs of physical fatigue, raising questions about his ability to compete at a high level without sacrificing his health.
Vandeweghe’s concern is even more pertinent given Fritz’s injury history. The 28-year-old player underwent meniscus surgery in 2021 and has recently been facing knee issues and an oblique injury. In an attempt to justify his intense schedule, Fritz commented that “it’s not something that gets better with a little tendinitis” and that he relies on his physiotherapist to find a way to improve while competing.
During an appearance on the Big T podcast, Vandeweghe expressed his disbelief over Fritz’s choice to compete so frequently, especially with the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells approaching, a tournament he won in 2022 and considers crucial. “I think it’s stupid because he had that knee injury he had surgery on. He’s too young to be putting that kind of pressure on himself,” Vandeweghe stated, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing health rather than risking a worsening of injuries.
Fritz, now focused on the quarter-finals, faces a challenge ahead as he takes on friend and compatriot Tommy Paul, the fifth seed, in a rematch of the 2024 final, where he previously triumphed in straight sets. A victory in this match would not only secure his place in the semi-finals but also raise questions about his resilience and the potential repercussions of continuing to compete under such physical conditions.
As the tennis world watches closely, Fritz’s decision to pursue a demanding schedule could have serious consequences, both for his career and his health. The pressure to perform at home is high, but is the price worth paying? Time will tell whether Fritz’s talent can overcome his physical limitations, or if he will ultimately regret his choices.
