“Terence Atmane in shock after referee’s warning at a crucial moment.”

One of the most controversial and surprising matches of this year’s Mexican Open ended bizarrely, leaving spectators perplexed and French athlete Terence Atmane in shock. In an unexpected moment, the line judge decided the match without Atmane’s opponent, Miomir Kecmanovic, even needing to swing his racket. The time violation warning issued to Atmane at the crucial point sealed his fate, frustrating his hopes of reaching the semifinals.

Expectations were high for both players, with Kecmanovic ranked 84th in the world and Atmane 63rd. Kecmanovic was riding high after an impressive victory over tournament favorite Alexander Zverev and was looking to continue his good form. On the other hand, Atmane, who made a name for himself at the Cincinnati Open in 2025 by reaching the semifinals, was determined to replicate that feat, but he fell short, losing 6-3, 6-3 in Acapulco.

The match began with Kecmanovic displaying strength, overturning a 3-2 deficit to take the first set with an impressive string of victories. Not only did he dominate the match, but he also showed an incredible ability to regain confidence, winning four consecutive games and establishing a clear lead in the opening set.

However, the match scenario changed when Atmane, who had already received a prior warning for time violation, began to feel the effects of an illness. During the second half of the game, he requested more time from the referee, Scottie Moore, stating that he was “sweating like crazy” and needed a short break to recover. However, this request was ignored, and the pressure began to mount on him.

As the game approached its climax, Atmane had the chance to turn the situation around. After wasting three match points, he found himself facing a fourth decisive opportunity. However, as he stepped away to grab a towel, the referee announced that Kecmanovic was ready to serve, while Atmane was still struggling to recover. The referee then issued a new penalty for time violation, resulting in the loss of a point and, consequently, the match.

Atmane’s reaction was one of disbelief. He stood at the back of the court while Kecmanovic approached the umpire to greet him. The decision was met with a wave of boos from the Mexican crowd, who quickly began to support Atmane with shouts of “come on, Terence.” After such an intense match, the two athletes embraced, but Atmane, visibly dejected, slowly walked towards his bench, reflecting on the abrupt end to his participation in the tournament.

Now, Kecmanovic advances to the semifinals, where he will face the tournament’s number five seed, Flavio Cobolli, who has once again shown his potential. Expectations are high, especially with another thrilling matchup between Americans Frances Tiafoe and Brandon Nakashima on the other side of the draw. The outcome of Atmane’s match raises questions about the rigidity of time rules in tennis and how this can affect athletes’ performance at critical moments.
