Venus Williams, one of the greatest legends in tennis, has excited fans by expressing her belief that she and Coco Gauff could team up in doubles and “play well.” The 45-year-old tennis player, who has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, had the opportunity to play alongside the young star Gauff during the French Open in 2021, when the athlete was still a promising teenager.
On that occasion, the American duo faced a tough first-round defeat against the 13th seeds, Zheng Saisai and Ellen Perez, in a closely contested match that ended with scores of 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3. Despite the result, the experience of playing alongside Gauff was invaluable for both, and now, with the passage of time and the evolution of their careers, the possibility of a new partnership in doubles is more alive than ever.
With an impressive resume, Williams has won 14 Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles and three Olympic gold medals in partnership with her sister, Serena Williams. Her prowess in doubles took her to the world number 1 ranking in 2010 and led to victories in two mixed doubles tournaments in 1998. Since her participation in Roland Garros, Gauff has also forged a successful path, reaching the top of the world doubles rankings in 2022 and winning the French Open in 2024 alongside Katerina Siniakova.
After a 16-month absence, the iconic tennis player returned to the courts at the Washington Open last July, where she began playing doubles regularly again. Recently, Williams reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in partnership with Leylah Fernandez and is scheduled to compete with her at Indian Wells next week.
When asked about the possibility of playing with younger players, Williams did not hesitate to mention Gauff. “I had the chance to play with Coco years ago, but I think if we played again, we would definitely have more experience now, and she has a lot more experience. We would probably play well,” said the tennis player, showing her optimism and desire to collaborate with the new generation.
Despite her presence in doubles, Williams also competed in singles at the WTA 250 event in Austin, where she was eliminated by Ajla Tomljanovic with scores of 6-4, 6-1 in her debut. Now, the tennis player is preparing for her return to Indian Wells, where she received an invitation for both the singles and doubles competitions, again with Fernandez, marking her first appearance at the tournament since 2024, after having declined an invitation last year.
Fans are eagerly anticipating a potential pairing between Venus Williams and Coco Gauff in doubles, and this union could not only bring more excitement to the circuit but also serve as a testament to the legacy that Williams continues to build both on and off the court.
