Victoria Mboko, a rising star in the world of tennis, is drawing attention and making an impact following her impressive campaign at the BNP Paribas Open, despite suffering a tough defeat against world number one, Aryna Sabalenka. The young Canadian, just 19 years old, showcased her potential in an exciting quarter-final match that ended with scores of 7-6(0), 6-4. Instead of viewing the match as a setback, Mboko saw it as “more of a lesson than a loss,” reflecting her resilience and forward-looking mindset.

In her debut at this prestigious tournament, Mboko not only reached the quarter-finals but also delivered one of the strongest performances of her young career. Acknowledging the significant challenge posed by Sabalenka, who emerged victorious after saving all five break points she faced, Mboko emphasized the valuable experience of competing against such a formidable opponent. “Aryna played really good tennis today, and I was able to leave the court today with more of a lesson than a loss,” she stated at the press conference following the match.

Reflecting on the match, Mboko emphasized that the game highlighted the vital importance of seizing small opportunities that can quickly change the course of a contest at the highest level. The first set was particularly crucial, filled with moments that could have played in her favor. “I had many opportunities in the first set. It’s a shame I couldn’t take advantage of them as much as I could, but she was playing very well, especially at the pressure points,” she lamented. This sentiment was reflected throughout her analysis, noting that some critical points could have altered the trajectory of the match. “At times I was maybe one or two points away from changing how the first set would have gone and shifting the momentum of the game.”

This quarter-final clash was not the first encounter between the two; it was a rematch following their previous meeting at the Australian Open, where Sabalenka dominated with a score of 6-1, 7-6(1). However, Mboko expressed confidence in the evolution of her game since that defeat, demonstrating clear progress. “The first time I played against her, I was a bit overwhelmed with everything that was happening, being on the main court for the first time,” she recalled. This time she felt more at ease, taking the first set to very advanced stages and engaging in prolonged rallies that tested Sabalenka.

With her sights set on the future, she is now preparing for the Miami Open while eagerly anticipating representing Canada in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers in Kazakhstan. “Right now, Miami is on my mind… but honestly, I’m not looking that far ahead,” she concluded, demonstrating focus and determination as she continues her journey toward the top of world tennis.
