Zverev criticizes his father after reaching the Roland Garros final.

Alexander Zverev has reached the final of the French Open, but it was his controversial statement about his father that stole the spotlight. After decisively defeating Jakub Mensik 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals, the German tennis player did not hold back in his criticism of his parent, in an episode that promises to reignite family tensions in the world of tennis.

The German, seeded second, confirmed his place in the Roland Garros final for the second time in his career, benefiting from the early exits of prominent figures such as Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. However, despite the victory, Zverev maintained a restrained demeanor during the celebration, aware that the biggest challenge is yet to come.

However, it was in the post-match press conference that the most explosive moment occurred. When asked by former finalist Alex Corretja about the role of his coaching team in his journey to the final, Zverev did not hesitate to deliver a pointed jab at his father, Alexander Zverev Sr.: “My coach hasn’t said anything to me in 25 years. I wish he would say something, at least once in a while.” The provocation did not stop there. When prompted to say something positive about his father, the 29-year-old tennis player reinforced his attack: “No, I’ve lost so many matches in my life and he never said anything. So that doesn’t change anything.”

This outburst came at a time when Zverev is being pointed out as the clear favorite to win the Coupe des Mousquetaires, in a final scheduled for Sunday, where he will face Matteo Arnaldi or Flavio Cobolli on the Court Philippe Chatrier. Former champion Jim Courier highlighted the maturity and resilience of the German player, emphasizing that, despite the praise, the path to the title is still far from complete: “His work is not done yet, and he is not celebrating as if it is. This is just another step towards the trophy he so desires. He has had a remarkable run in these six matches, eliminating some promising young players like Jodar and Mensik. Now he is the favorite for the final.”

If Zverev triumphs, he will achieve a historic feat: he will become the seventh oldest player to win his first Grand Slam in the Open era and the first German to lift a major title since Michael Stich, who won Wimbledon in 1991.

As anticipation builds for the final, Zverev’s comments about his father are set to generate even more controversy in an already charged atmosphere. The battle on the court promises to be intense, but off it, family sparks are also expected to fly.
