Braga resists Inter’s proposal for Hornicek, but negotiations continue.

Negotiations stalled, but the saga is far from over: Inter Milan’s first bid for Hornicek, the breakout goalkeeper from SC Braga, was rejected, but the club is preparing to make another attempt this summer. The Minho club has been firm regarding the €30 million release clause, rejecting any discounts and sending a clear message to the European market: anyone wanting to sign the Czech international must pay up, without exceptions.

The initial approach from the Italian giants occurred in recent days, at a time when Hornicek, 23, is focused on the World Cup with the Czech Republic, but Braga did not hesitate: the proposal was promptly rejected. The club’s management considers the young goalkeeper a strategic investment, both for the present and the immediate future, and they do not want to lose what has become one of the most valuable assets in Liga Portugal. There is even the possibility of a contract renewal on the table, a clear indication that António Salvador intends to secure the Czech talent amid increasing interest.

The interest from Inter is not an isolated case. Sources close to the process confirm that several clubs from the Premier League, particularly those in the English top 10, are keeping a close watch on Hornicek and could enter the race at any moment. The financial power of British clubs is seen in Braga as the biggest threat to the player’s continuity, as few clubs outside of England can meet the financial demands of the Minho side. The summer transfer window promises to be heated, with several potential offers looming on the horizon.

This standoff is symptomatic of Braga’s new policy, which is not willing to sell its best players cheaply. The possible departure of Hornicek would have profound implications for the Arsenalista goal, but the club has prepared in advance. Bernardo Fontes, returning after a positive season at Tondela, and Tiago Sá, who remains a reliable alternative, ensure some peace of mind should an irresistible offer arise. Romário Cunha is seen as a future solution, while João Carvalho will be loaned out to gain minutes, and Alaa Bellaarouch may be transferred or even sold.

Within the locker room, Hornicek’s focus is currently far from the Pedreira. The goalkeeper is serving the Czech national team at the World Cup, where he has already made his debut for the senior team in a friendly against Kosovo. Although Matej Kovar from PSV Eindhoven is the usual starter, Hornicek’s inclusion in the squad has significantly increased his international value. Regardless of the playing time he accumulates, simply being called up to the biggest stage in world football is viewed as a valuable asset for his résumé and for Braga, which thus strengthens its negotiating position.

When asked about the interest from major European clubs, Hornicek maintained his focus on the national team: “My focus is entirely on the Czech Republic and helping the team in the World Cup. The future will be decided later.” The statements made by the young goalkeeper during the press conference before the match against South Korea demonstrate maturity and calm in the face of constant speculation.

For António Salvador, president of Braga, there is no room for concessions. “Hornicek is fundamental to our project. Whoever wants him will have to pay the clause. There are no discounts or discussions,” stated the official on the sidelines of a recent event, reinforcing the club’s firm stance on this matter.

The conclusion of this saga is set to stir the transfer market in Portugal and Italy. With Inter determined to make another move and the Premier League keeping a close eye on the situation, Hornicek’s continuation at Pedreira is far from guaranteed. Should someone trigger the clause, Braga will need to act quickly to secure a successor in goal, but they will be financially strengthened to pursue other objectives. One thing is certain: Hornicek’s name will continue to make headlines and dominate the upcoming weeks of the transfer market.
