Victor Froholdt, the young Danish star of FC Porto, candidly reveals how his “crazy year” with the blue and white team unfolded, in a season that marked his definitive establishment in European football. At just 20 years old, the midfielder not only helped FC Porto secure the coveted championship but also grew personally and professionally, opening up in an exclusive interview with the Danish newspaper ‘Bold’.
“It was a crazy year on a personal level, but also for the team. We had an incredible evolution. A young team, we ended up winning the championship together and dedicated it to the city, to the team, to the fans who had been longing for this for a few years,” Froholdt confessed, highlighting the emotional impact and significance of this historic achievement. The midfielder does not hide his satisfaction in having contributed to FC Porto’s return to the top of Portuguese football, stating that this experience allowed him to grow “both as a person and as a football player.”
The adaptation to the new country and living alone in Portugal was another major challenge that the Danish player faced: “In fact, where I have evolved the most is on a personal level. Having to move to a new country was something new: living there alone, interacting with a new culture, a bunch of people from all over the world that you don’t know… The fact that I adapted to this, that I feel at home, but at the same time managed to have football accompany me and develop me as a player made it an incredible year for me and shows that it was the right step.”
Froholdt does not hide the ambition that drives him for the upcoming season: “I am looking forward to even more things. I also want to perform even better nationally; I have to prove that I can be among the best.” He acknowledges that his tactical versatility is an asset, but makes it clear what his true preferred position is: “I am a player who can cover several positions. But if I want to be one of the best and be a pillar of the team, I have to play in the center of the field.”
On his transfer to FC Porto, Froholdt was direct and to the point: “It was quite obvious that FC Porto was interested. I realized right away that it was the right step for me. I knew it was a league where I would fit in well. I would have the physical condition that would allow me to integrate into that team and fill the gaps I had, while also developing many technical skills and everything I needed to improve.” He emphasizes the extra motivation he felt upon joining a club that hadn’t won the title in several years: “Being able to contribute and fight to bring the club back to where it belongs was a huge motivation.”
On a personal level, the move to Portugal brought unexpected challenges: “I knew it would be difficult moving abroad on my own, but I don’t think I realized how hard it would be. I’m also lucky that football went well from the start, which made things easier. But you have to develop some human and personality qualities to create a social life when you live alone in a new and unfamiliar country.” Froholdt describes the loneliness he sometimes felt, reinforcing the importance of building new relationships to maintain emotional and professional balance.
The future promises to be even more challenging and exciting for the Danish midfielder: “I only have one Champions League game on my resume, so I’m looking forward to being able to compete in a full Champions League campaign with FC Porto. It’s the biggest tournament in Europe. We are looking forward to it. Testing ourselves at that level… It’s something we really want as a team, but also individually.” Additionally, Froholdt reveals that the dream of representing the national team remains one of his most important goals: “The national team is probably one of the most important things for me as well, being able to give my best there.”
With a meteoric rise and a champion’s mentality, Victor Froholdt is proving that FC Porto’s bet on a young foreign talent was spot on.
