Gonçalo Paciência erupts against the refereeing: “There are many artists to comment” and issues a strong warning after Santa Clara is robbed in Alvalade
The forward of Santa Clara did not hold back and fired off after the 4-2 defeat against Sporting, in a match that promises to stir up controversy. Gonçalo Paciência, known for his frankness, did not spare criticism of the referee’s performance and issued a clear warning about the quality of refereeing in the Portuguese League. Santa Clara scored three goals in Alvalade, but left empty-handed and with a bitter taste, in a match where justice seemed to have been left at the door.
“When you come to Alvalade, if you score three goals and don’t take any points, it’s difficult, three goals because they are three goals. Everyone saw it, I don’t want to fuel the refereeing, but it is what it is, it’s the football we have, it’s the league we want to promote. There are a lot of artists out there to comment…”, lamented Gonçalo Paciência, expressing his frustration over what he considers a clear injustice.
The match became controversial early on. Santa Clara scored the first goal, but saw a decisive play annulled after a slip by defender Mangas, which was ruled a foul, destabilizing the Azorean team. “It’s not by chance. I wasn’t in the other games, but that’s what was seen. We scored the first goal, then that slip by Mangas which was ruled a foul. But the team did well. Three goals in Alvalade, and we leave without points… Let’s move on, there’s more to come next week,” said the forward, with a mix of dismay and determination.
Despite the defeat, Gonçalo Paciência wants the team to keep their heads held high. “Not just from Alvalade, whether we start well or poorly, the team always fights until the end. Today, we showed that. It’s unfair; we go home sad because we deserved more. Sporting is from another league, but we did many good things and deserve more,” he emphasized, highlighting the strength and resilience of Santa Clara in the face of evident adversities.
Regarding his individual performance, Gonçalo highlighted his impact on the game, recalling that he had already scored against Benfica and that he is fulfilling the role that is asked of him. “What they have asked me is to help, to do my best, and that’s what I did. I scored two goals; one wasn’t credited to me, but with my head held high, we are aware of what we did and what there is to conquer,” concluded the forward, showing confidence in the team’s future.
This episode sheds harsh light on the controversies that continue to surround refereeing in Portuguese football, especially in major matches, and promises to fuel heated debates in the coming days. Gonçalo Paciência did not just play; he attacked the structure that he believes is harming his team and issued a clear warning: the fight for Santa Clara is far from over, and justice in Portuguese football is still a mirage to be conquered.
