Paulo Fonseca could not hold back his tears after Lyon’s 2-0 win over Angers in Ligue 1 at the Groupama Stadium. The Portuguese manager is reported to be Sporting’s main target to succeed Rui Borges, meaning this could have been his last match in charge of the French side.
Fonseca’s emotion was evident when Corentin Tolisso scored the second goal, which led to speculation about a possible farewell.
Fonseca: “For now, there is nothing”
Speaking to Ligue 1+, Fonseca addressed the situation: “Tomorrow I will be here, with the team. For now, there is nothing.” The manager explained his emotional reaction after Tolisso’s goal: “It was an emotional moment when Coco scored the second goal. He came to celebrate with me. Let’s see if that celebration was his way of telling me to stay.”
Fonseca stressed that the situation at the club is not easy for anyone: “People need to understand that things are not easy for everyone at the club.”
Asked about the possibility of leaving Lyon, Fonseca did not hesitate to admit: “It is a possibility. I really like this group; I think they are wonderful. Sometimes it is hard to understand the difficulties we are facing…” The manager praised the work of the club’s board but stressed the need for understanding in difficult times.
Asked about a move to Sporting, Fonseca replied: “At this moment, anything is possible.” The manager appeared uncertain about the immediate future, reiterating that “I don’t know if I will be here in the coming days.” Even so, he showed his attachment to the club: “I really like being here – the club and the coaching staff.”
Tolisso wants Fonseca to stay
Before Fonseca, Tolisso also commented on the speculation about the manager’s departure and said he had no further information on the situation. The player expressed his wish for Fonseca to stay and praised the work done since his arrival at the club: “Since he arrived, he has done an extraordinary job. I want to keep working with him. It is an opportunity for OL to have a manager like him.”
Paulo Fonseca’s next decision could have an impact on his career, and also on Lyon’s trajectory and their fight for the lead in the competition. Fans and players are awaiting news about the manager’s future.
