A financial abyss threatened to engulf FC Porto at the moment André Villas-Boas took over the presidency, leading the club into a situation so dramatic that the leader himself admitted to being “quite scared.” The revelation, made in a bombshell interview on the podcast Primeiro Toque, exposes the nearly insurmountable difficulties that marked the early days of a new cycle for the Dragons, where the survival of the blue and white emblem was literally hanging by a thread.
Villas-Boas, who took office on April 27, 2024, described a scenario of near collapse: “Since I took office, FC Porto had responsibilities of 16 million euros to pay in a month and had no possibility of meeting them. Therefore, we were saved by club members, who allowed us an immediate capital injection to meet those obligations, which included payments to suppliers, to clubs, salaries to staff, and to players from different sports, which were overdue.” The situation was so delicate that, in the president's own words, “the reality was very difficult, almost an impossible battle, to the point of being quite scary.”
This emergency intervention by the members, in a gesture of unparalleled devotion, was crucial in preventing an unprecedented disaster in Portuguese football. Villas-Boas did not hide his gratitude: “There are many people, like us, who relate to the total love for FC Porto and who did not hesitate to deposit money that is theirs into the club's accounts. FC Porto was able to return that money, by December 2024, as a result of the completion of the Porto StadeCo project, which allowed us to raise 115 million euros in US private placement bonds, therefore, in obligations in the American market.”
The financial urgency was mitigated by a combination of strategic initiatives, including the sale of part of Porto StadeCo to Ithaka and the transfer of Nico González and Galeno, which together provided an additional cash flow of 110 million euros in January 2025. “From that point on, there was also, as a continuation of this project, the sale of part of Porto StadeCo to Ithaka, therefore, a construction of a business that had already been initiated by the previous administration. This raised our total capital to around 180 million euros,” detailed Villas-Boas. These operations proved decisive not only for the immediate solvency of the club but also for restoring confidence among banks, suppliers, and employees.
In the highly competitive context of Portuguese football, this recovery takes on even more significant dimensions. FC Porto, which was on the brink of insolvency, managed to transform itself into a solid and credible project in just a few months, capable of investing in the squad for the 2025/26 season. Villas-Boas emphasized: “At this moment, by a small margin, FC Porto is not currently the most valuable squad in Portuguese football, because that of Sporting is still valued higher. But it is very close, within a distance of 10 million euros.” This proximity to the top of national football demonstrates the immediate impact of the financial restructuring.
Despite the success, the president does not forget the sleepless nights and the humiliation of nearly failing to meet commitments: “A deep transformation, many headaches, many scares, a lot of shame too, because when you are in front of someone and you say that you do not have the capacity to pay for something you are obligated to, it hurts, because people also have their own responsibilities. And, in the end, that was the great victory of our management team,” concluded Villas-Boas.
FC Porto is now preparing for a new phase, marked by renewed ambitions both on and off the pitch. The financial cleanup provides the club with a solid foundation to attack the market, strengthen the squad, and compete for titles, while the proximity to Sporting's market value intensifies the rivalry even further. It remains to be seen whether this rapid recovery will be enough to return the dragons to the top of Portuguese football and ensure long-term stability. What is certain is that, after the scare, FC Porto is back in the fight — and more determined than ever.
