Portugal kicks off the World Cup with a convincing performance against Nigeria, leaving fans ecstatic and Roberto Martínez more confident than ever. The 2-1 victory this evening in Leiria not only boosted the team’s morale but also served as a stage for tactical tests that could be decisive in the World Championship. The national coach, visibly pleased, did not hide his enthusiasm for the players’ performance and assured: “Fans can rest easy.”
The Portuguese national team, known as the Quinas, made several changes compared to their previous match against Chile, allowing all 26 players called up to gain minutes in these two preparatory games. João Félix, highlighted as one of the standout performers of the night, showcased his great form once again, although bad luck prevented him from scoring. Martínez emphasized after the match: “João Félix is in a very good moment, he had a brutal season. He was unlucky, because that ball goes into the net… We had an individual plan for each player and we managed to achieve what we set out to do.” Nigeria, a physically strong opponent, posed challenges similar to those expected from Congo, Portugal’s next adversary in the World Cup.

Before addressing the match, [Roberto Martínez](https://apitofinal.pt/nacional/roberto-martinez-valoriza-vitoria-e-preparacao-de-portugal-antes-do-mundial/) took a moment to express his condolences for the death of a supporter in the stands of the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, paying tribute to the family and promising: “We will try to win the first game of the World Cup to honor him.” This moment of solidarity did not go unnoticed and reinforced the spirit of unity around the national team.
The management of the squad was another topic addressed by the coach. When asked about the reason for substituting almost the entire team at halftime, except for Cristiano Ronaldo, Martínez explained: “We had a plan for all the players, with a lot of information. Cristiano was scheduled to play 45/60 minutes in both games, as were other cases that we had clearly outlined. We achieved the plans for all the players.” This strategic approach allowed for squad rotation, increased competitive rhythm, and prepared the team for the demands of the World Cup.
The coach did not hide that there are still aspects to improve, particularly in anticipating opponents’ dynamics and reacting to set pieces. “We need to work and adjust concepts for all opponents, who are different. Nigeria today showed us something that Congo could also do. We tried to anticipate what might happen… I feel the team is ready for the World Cup,” Martínez assured, emphasizing his confidence in the working group.
Martínez also stated that the atmosphere in the locker room is one of great focus and freshness, countering the usual notion of fatigue at this stage of the season: “The locker room is working with incredible focus. We are improving a lot and I am very happy because the players have freshness. I don’t have the feeling that the players are at the end of the season; on the contrary, it seems they are at the beginning.”
Regarding the starting eleven for the World Cup, the Spanish coach was emphatic: “I am very annoying. There is no starting eleven; in modern football, there are 26 players who can help the National Team. Our ideas for the game against Congo are very clear, but we have many players who can execute those ideas. I cannot limit the quality we have to 11 players; that would be a mistake. We have 23 outfield players all ready to help.” This philosophy of versatility and emphasis on the collective could be the key to overcoming the challenges ahead.
With the World Cup approaching, Portugal presents itself as one of the most balanced and prepared teams in the competition. The performance against Nigeria, the careful management of the squad, and the confidence conveyed by Martínez suggest a high-level performance is on the horizon. The next step will be the debut against Congo, where the tactical evolution and winning spirit that have characterized this preparation are expected to be confirmed. According to the coach, Portuguese fans can breathe a sigh of relief: the National Team is ready to aim high on the world stage.
