Rui Borges, the coach of Sporting, did not shy away from sensitive topics during the press conference ahead of the clash against Estoril, scheduled for this Friday at 8:45 PM, in the 24th round of the Primeira Liga. In an analysis that promises to resonate with fans, Borges discussed the current phase of his team, the importance of the schedule without the Champions League play-off, and, inevitably, the controversial case of Prestianni.

Starting with the form of his team, Rui Borges expressed confidence: “I don’t think there’s a better moment; it’s natural to have ups and downs. Our intensity has dropped in some games, but the quality is always there. The 19 games say just that. We are consistent.” The coach emphasized that, despite the home defeat against FC Porto, the start of the season was positive. With the expectation of having more players recovered for the upcoming challenges, Borges did not hide his frustration at having given up the Champions League play-off, a decision that, according to him, allowed the team to focus more on training. “We played in Dortmund with many kids from the B team. Better or worse, I don’t know. Last year’s team was champion; this year we are in the fight,” he stated, reinforcing the group’s resilience.

With the schedule easing up without the pressure of the Champions League, the coach highlighted the importance of this time to reinforce the team’s playing dynamics. “It was important because we trained a bit more. Normally, we just rest. Now we can intensify the dynamics we have, and I believe that repetition and day-to-day work serve to solidify both offensive and defensive matters,” emphasized Borges, stressing that this phase has been a crucial moment to solidify the team’s identity.

However, the conversation could not avoid one of the most pressing topics in football today: racism. Regarding the case of Prestianni, Rui Borges did not hesitate to take a stand: “I think racism is a societal problem. I won’t go down that path. We all have to set an example, including us as parents.” The coach, who showed awareness of the role of adults in shaping a fairer and more equal society, stated that “we have an obligation to show that we are all equal and to make racism happen less and less.” He also mentioned the importance of education, quoting Guardiola, by stating that “nowadays, it’s very much about teaching adolescents and children.”

Borges also commented on the thrilling clash between Benfica and Real Madrid, which he closely followed. “I was attentive to the game because it was a good match to watch, and it was a good game between Benfica and Real Madrid,” he said, revealing his appreciation for the spectacle of football, even when his focus is on his own team.

With Estoril on the horizon, the words of Rui Borges resonate with the determination of a coach who believes in the strength of his team and does not hesitate to face challenges both on and off the field. Sporting, under his leadership, promises to continue the fight for excellence and to build a more inclusive environment in sports.
