Schmeichel criticizes the refereeing and argues that Arsenal should not be in the lead.

The controversy is igniting the Premier League following the disallowed goal for West Ham in the London derby against Arsenal, a moment that could have determined the course of the championship leadership. This is because the referee ruled out a goal by Callum Wilson, citing a foul by Pablo on Raya during a corner – a decision that is dividing opinions and calling into question the consistency of officiating in the competition.

Peter Schmeichel, the legendary Danish goalkeeper who shone at Manchester United and made history at Sporting, did not hide his outrage over this situation. In strong statements to TNT Sports, Schmeichel was emphatic: “What really annoys me is that Arsenal would never be at the top of the table if that was a foul. That’s how they have scored so many goals: blocking opponents, holding them, doing all kinds of things.”

The former Danish international did not hold back in his criticism of the officiating team, also highlighting the excessive time spent by VAR to make a decision that, in his opinion, should not have been a foul at all. “VAR takes five minutes and replays the incident over and over again. That, in itself, raises so many doubts about that decision, that it cannot be a foul. It can’t. It’s so wrong,” Schmeichel stated, leaving the impression that the video assistant referee’s intervention was neither fair nor consistent.

The controversy is not limited to the match itself, but extends to the direct impact this decision could have on the title race and the battle for survival. Schmeichel lamented the practical effect of this officiating, questioning the sudden change in criteria at the most decisive moment of the season. “I simply do not understand why, all of a sudden, this is a foul. Because it hasn’t been that way for any team throughout the entire season. All of this is simply madness. That decision today… is so wrong on so many levels.”

With this moral victory, Arsenal maintains its lead in the championship and continues to rely solely on itself to win the title. On the other hand, West Ham sees its survival threatened, now depending on Tottenham’s performance to avoid relegation. This controversial decision promises to leave deep marks in the final stretch of the Premier League, fueling heated debates about the fairness and consistency of refereeing in English football.
