Robert Lewandowski drops a bombshell: he may leave Barcelona to play in a lower league to “enjoy life”
Robert Lewandowski’s future is uncertain, and the Polish forward does not hide the fact that his career could take a surprising turn. During the celebrations on the pitch at Camp Nou, Lewandowski was asked what awaits him after the end of the season. “We’ll see. I will surely wait for different options to appear, and then I will decide what is best for me and my family,” he responded to Canal Plus+ Poland, before being interrupted by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, his compatriot.
The Polish international emphasized the importance of finding a balance between sporting ambitions and family life: “You cannot separate one from the other, because everything is important. I believe that, in the end, it is about choosing what we feel is best. And that’s the direction we will take.”
Lewandowski also reflected on his season at Barcelona, acknowledging the difficulties he faced with coach Hansi Flick’s choices. “Sometimes I understood, other times, obviously, I wanted to play. It depends on the games,” he commented, justifying his management of minutes with the physical problems he encountered: “The season was long and, at the beginning, I had muscle issues. One, two, and even three minor injuries held me back, especially at the start. Then I had to find my rhythm again, and that also takes time. It wasn’t easy, but I was always prepared and always wanted to play. That’s natural for me.”
In another moment of the interview, this time with the Polish channel Eleven Sports, Lewandowski was even more direct in admitting that he is considering the possibility of continuing to play in a lower league, even at nearly 38 years old: “There may be an option in a lower league. I’m almost 38, but I feel good physically, so I’m considering that possibility. I have to take into account the chance that this might be the moment to play and enjoy life. Perhaps that option will arise, and I do not rule out that possibility.”
The forward made it clear that he still has time to decide: “I just found out that I have 51 days left on my contract, so I still have time. I will listen to a few more offers and then I will decide. We will see what happens, but one thing is certain: I will continue to play.”
