Injury complicates Emma Raducanu’s return and leads to a new drop in the rankings.

Emma Raducanu is about to face one of the most uncertain and worrying periods of her career, after her name disappeared from the initial entry list for the Washington Open, leaving fans anxious about her return to the courts. The absence of the British player, who has been dealing with a complicated injury, raises serious doubts about her participation in the demanding North American hard court season and threatens to cause a significant drop in the WTA ranking.

Raducanu, currently the number one British player and a former top 10 player in the world, was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon just before starting her campaign on the sacred grass, after failing to recover in time from a stress fracture in her right leg. The announcement was made by the player herself in an emotional statement just before midnight on Sunday, where she explained: “I did everything I could to try to get to the starting line tomorrow, but after a final MRI tonight, the injury I had been managing has progressed to a stress fracture and I was advised, for medical reasons, to stop immediately.” Two days later, Raducanu was seen on crutches, a clear sign of the severity of the injury and the uncertainty surrounding her return.

Her absence from the list of players announced for the WTA 500 in Washington has further intensified concerns. The tournament, which kicks off on July 27, traditionally marks the beginning of the North American hard-court swing, serving as a key preparation stage for the US Open. Among the confirmed participants are notable names such as Leylah Fernandez, who returns to defend her title, Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka, Venus Williams, and Madison Keys, which further elevates the event's profile – but the void left by Raducanu is palpable, both due to her competitive history in the tournament and the media interest she generates.

In the last four years, Raducanu has participated three times in the Mubadala Citi DC Open, reaching the quarter-finals in 2022 and 2024, and the semi-finals in 2023, where she fell to Anna Kalinskaya. This year, the British tennis player needed to defend 195 points earned in the previous edition, so her absence could cause her to plummet in the rankings, even putting her place in the world top 50 at risk. Before Wimbledon, she was in 33rd place, but her early withdrawal has already seen her drop to 30th in the Live Rankings, with potential for further decline if she does not return to competition quickly.

The impact of this break is enormous, especially at a time in the season when most of her direct rivals are still active and accumulating points. The loss of competitive rhythm and the drop in ranking could jeopardize her preparation and confidence for the US Open, where in 2021 she pulled off one of the biggest surprises in tennis history by winning the title coming from qualifying. The risk of recurring injury also raises doubts about Raducanu's physical management, which has already been the subject of criticism and concern on the circuit. Former British player Greg Rusedski expressed his apprehension following the withdrawals of Raducanu and Jack Draper at Wimbledon, stating that “it is concerning to see young British talents being forced to withdraw due to injuries.”

Despite the grim outlook, there is still hope that Raducanu may expedite her return. The coaching team is keeping open the possibility of late entry into the Washington Open or other tournaments, such as the Athens Open (July 13) or the Prague Open (July 20), should her recovery progress favorably. However, sources close to the athlete assure that there will be no rush, as the priority is to prepare her body for the big stages – and to avoid any potentially fatal relapses before the US Open. Participation in clay court tournaments after Wimbledon is practically ruled out, given the demands of that surface and the increased risk to the athlete's physical integrity.

The WTA calendar follows a frenetic pace, with the Canadian Open starting on August 2 in Toronto and the Cincinnati Open shortly after, on August 13. Raducanu has little time to make crucial decisions regarding her return, and if she misses more events, she could find herself relegated outside the top 50, losing direct access to main draws and suffering a significant blow to her morale and status. The tennis world is eagerly awaiting a positive sign, but the management of this injury will be crucial not only for the rest of the season but also for the future of the career of one of the most promising figures in women's tennis.
