Manchester United is experiencing a time of great turmoil and anticipation as the search for a new manager intensifies. Recently, intriguing information has emerged indicating that Julian Nagelsmann, one of the most promising coaches today, is open to a possible return to English football, while INEOS, the company that owns the club, is also considering a controversial option that has sparked internal discussions.
The situation at United began to complicate when Ruben Amorim was dismissed on January 5, following a disagreement with football director Jason Wilcox regarding transfers and tactics. Michael Carrick, a former player for the club, was appointed as interim manager until the end of the season, with the intention of giving the management time to assess long-term candidates.
However, Carrick has surprised everyone with his performance since returning to Old Trafford, now placing himself in the running for the permanent position. Internal sources have revealed that INEOS executives are “excited” about the work Carrick has been doing, leading the team to a favorable position in the fight for qualification for the Champions League. Players such as Kobbie Mainoo, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens have shown significant progress under his guidance.
Although Carrick is doing an admirable job, Manchester United is not ruling out big names for the next appointment. Thomas Tuchel, one of the main candidates, has decided to extend his contract as manager of the England national team, while Nagelsmann may leave his position as coach of Germany after the World Cup. Transfer expert Ben Jacobs revealed that Nagelsmann, at just 38 years old, is interested in a major move in the Premier League.
“Michael Carrick could theoretically land the position, but it’s too early to say that,” Jacobs told The United Stand. “Julian Nagelsmann is certainly interested in a job in the Premier League, unlike other names like Tuchel or Ancelotti. He should be available on the market.”
In addition to Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi is also emerging as a concrete option, while Roberto Martinez’s name has surprisingly been mentioned in internal discussions. “Martinez is on his way out of Portugal, and José Mourinho could be his successor. I don’t believe the data and style of play put him at the top of the list, but he is being discussed as they create this list of candidates,” Jacobs added.
Nagelsmann, who stood out as the youngest coach in the Bundesliga when he took over Hoffenheim at the age of 28, has had a remarkable stint at clubs like RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich. Despite a mixed experience at Bayern, his market value remains high. On the other hand, a potential appointment of Martinez may disappoint fans, as, despite a good track record in international football, his lack of experience in elite clubs could make his hiring a risk.
The Manchester United may still face competition from Tottenham Hotspur for coaches like De Zerbi and Mauricio Pochettino. The final decision regarding the club’s future coach is expected to be postponed until the end of the season, even though Carrick has made a positive impression. Journalist Henry Winter praised Carrick for helping the club move away from the “absurd press conferences” that characterized the Amorim era. The saga to find the ideal successor continues, and the future of one of the world’s biggest clubs is at stake.
