“Barcelona under investigation for Julián Álvarez transfer”

Barcelona is under investigation by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) due to allegations of improper conduct in their pursuit of Julián Alvarez. This situation arises after Atlético de Madrid filed a formal complaint, dated June 30, accusing the Catalans of making an illegal approach during the period outside the transfer window, particularly following the revelation of a €100 million proposal.

The RFEF has now contacted both teams to present their versions of events. Once the clubs submit their accounts, a disciplinary committee will assess whether there are grounds to bring charges against Barcelona. It is expected that the Catalan club will seek to overturn the decision with an appeal.

The situation is further complicated as Atlético de Madrid has made it clear that they are unwilling to sell Alvarez, especially to Barcelona, even though the player himself has shown interest in making the move. With a contract that extends until 2030, the situation has become a genuine stalemate. According to regulations, Barcelona would need to reach an agreement on the transfer fee with Atlético before obtaining permission to negotiate with Alvarez. However, the reality of the market is often murky, with intermediaries and agents circumventing the rules.

At the heart of Atlético’s complaint is the accusation that Barcelona contacted individuals close to Alvarez without prior authorization, a process known as “tapping up.” Additionally, Atlético accused the Catalans of a “smear campaign” and of spreading “false news” to destabilize Alvarez and pressure the Madrid club.

This is not the first case of complaints between the two teams. In 2019, Atlético had already complained to the RFEF about Barcelona’s approach to Antoine Griezmann, accusing them of initiating negotiations when the release clause was over 200 million euros. At the time, the RFEF ruled in favor of Atlético, but the sanction was minimal, resulting in a fine of only 300 euros, given that Atlético had already admitted the player’s departure.

With Atlético’s firm stance regarding Alvarez, a possible guilty verdict for Barcelona could result in a more severe penalty. While a fine is a possibility, there is also concern that FIFA may intervene, imposing transfer bans in cases of “tapping up.” The specific nature of Barcelona’s conduct will be decisive for the severity of the sanction that may be imposed.
