Illan Meslier surprised many by giving the long-awaited “yes” to Arsenal's proposal, after successfully completing his medical examinations and signing a contract this week, in a transfer that is shaking up the summer market. The 26-year-old French goalkeeper, who recently ended his association with Leeds United, is preparing for a new chapter in the Premier League, now at the service of the Gunners.
Meslier, now a free agent after six impactful years at Elland Road, has made 215 official appearances for Leeds, having been a key player in the club's two promotions to the Premier League in 2020 and 2025. This swift transfer was confirmed on Wednesday morning by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, highlighting the frantic pace of the deal. “Illan Meslier to Arsenal, it’s done! Medicals already completed and an agreement sealed with the former Leeds United goalkeeper. The contract was also signed after the medicals in London on Tuesday. Meslier said yes to the #AFC project, as reported by @gunnerblog,” Romano revealed, detailing the entire process.
Meslier's arrival at Arsenal is expected to mean the departure of Tommy Setford, who occupies the third goalkeeper spot in Mikel Arteta's hierarchy, which already includes David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga in the squad. However, according to information from TalkSPORT, Arrizabalaga is expected to leave the club this summer, which could propel Meslier into the second-choice position, with increased opportunities for involvement in cup competitions.
Interestingly, Meslier lost playing time at Leeds last season, falling behind Karl Darlow and Lucas Perri in coach Daniel Farke's options, and did not make any appearances in official matches under the German manager. This move to London thus represents an opportunity to relaunch his career on one of the biggest stages in English football.
The French goalkeeper will be Arsenal's second signing of the summer, joining Piero Hincapie, who signed permanently after a successful loan spell, in a transfer valued at £34.5 million. Meslier's integration promises to strengthen the Gunners' goalkeeping position at a time when the club is seeking solid solutions for all competitions next season.

O MUNDIAL 2026 VIVE-SE COM A LEGO
With the officialization of the contract and the imminent departure of Arrizabalaga, Meslier could become a key figure in London, especially in cup matches. It remains to be seen how Mikel Arteta will manage the new setup in goal and what impact this decision will have on the team's balance throughout the season.
