Harry Kane shines in England’s victorious start against Croatia.

Harry Kane dismantled the Croatian defense as England triumphed with four goals to launch their bid for the 2026 World Cup in spectacular fashion. The English forward scored twice, matching a historic record, and was the standout player in a frenetic match where Croatia faltered again in their World Cup opening – they now have four losses in their last five opening games in World Cups.

Thomas Tuchel’s debut at the helm of the “Three Lions” could not have gone better. In his first major test as England manager, the German coach saw his team defeat Croatia 4-2 on Monday in a match played under high competitive tension. The game took place on neutral ground, with both teams delivering a true festival of goals and emotions. Harry Kane, the English captain, experienced an unforgettable night by scoring twice, while Baturina and Musa netted Croatia’s goals, which were not enough to counter the British offensive onslaught.

The World Cup is experienced with LEGO.

This victorious start is crucial for English aspirations, which pursue the dream of winning their first senior men’s trophy in 60 years. The robust victory places England in a privileged position within the group, while Zlatko Dalić’s Croatia – which had two consecutive appearances in the semi-finals – stumbles again and risks complicating matters right from the first match. The pressure is mounting on the Croatians, who will need to react quickly to avoid an early elimination and maintain their status as a dangerous outsider.

The match began with nerves running high, and just 15 minutes in, the first controversial moment occurred: Noni Madueke was brought down in the area by Luka Modrić, and referee Clément Turpin awarded a penalty. Harry Kane missed the initial shot, but Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković advanced early, and Joško Gvardiol entered the area too soon, prompting the referee to order a retake. On the second attempt, Kane made no mistake and opened the scoring, celebrating his 30th appearance in major tournaments for the national team with yet another goal.

Croatia responded immediately, and Martin Baturina scored a stunning long-range goal, leaving Jordan Pickford with no chance. However, England came back strong, and Kane headed in a second goal after a corner from Declan Rice, equalling Gary Lineker as the top English scorer in World Cup finals with 10 goals. Despite the lead, the English defense faltered, and Petar Musa equalized again, taking advantage of a deflection from Ivan Perišić to beat Pickford just before halftime.

In the second half, the English came out firing, and just 47 minutes in, Jude Bellingham restored the lead for the Brits. The young prodigy, who became the youngest European to play in four major tournaments, finished from a tight angle after a brilliant pass from Elliot Anderson. “It was incredible to score in this special game. I want to keep helping the team go far,” Bellingham stated afterward.

With the game still in the balance, Livaković shone by denying a fourth goal to Rice, O’Reilly, and Anthony Gordon, keeping Croatia in the match. The Croatians also threatened through Marco Pašalić, but Pickford responded well. The final blow came in the 84th minute: Bukayo Saka broke down the right, tore through the defense, and set up Marcus Rashford, who did not falter in front of Livaković, sealing the final score at 4-2. “It’s a fantastic feeling to come on and score. This group believes it can reach the top,” Rashford highlighted in the mixed zone.

England thus demonstrates its firepower and desire to end the long title drought. For Tuchel, the challenge now will be to solidify the defense, which again showed vulnerabilities. “We were effective in attack but need to be more consistent at the back,” warned the German coach.

The next round will be crucial for both teams. England can secure their place in the round of 16 and establish themselves as title favorites, while Croatia must win to avoid jeopardizing their continuation. A blazing start from the English promises to ignite the battle for the world throne next summer.
