Paulo Fonseca is about to take charge of Sporting CP, following an agreement between the manager and the Lisbon club. The news was first reported by Foot Mercato, which revealed that the Portuguese coach is Sporting’s main choice to replace Rui Borges, who has endured a spell of disappointing results.
Fonseca’s move to Sporting CP still depends on the termination of Rui Borges’ contract, but the club is confident it can finalise the deal quickly. The Lions want Fonseca in charge of the team for the UEFA Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk, scheduled for next Tuesday. So far, Sporting and Lyon have not reached an agreement on the terms of the manager’s departure, although the fact that Fonseca’s contract with Lyon runs until 2027 could ease the process.
After Lyon’s 2-0 win over Angers, Fonseca was asked about his future and said he “does not know whether he will finish the season in France”. This uncertainty opens the door to speculation about his successor, with L’Equipe reporting that former Juventus manager Thiago Motta is the leading candidate to replace Fonseca at Lyon.
Fonseca’s arrival at Sporting CP represents a significant change for the team, who are looking to reverse their negative trajectory. The new leadership could bring fresh momentum to the squad, especially with important competitions such as the UEFA Champions League approaching. Expectations are high, and Sporting CP fans are eagerly awaiting an official announcement confirming the arrival of the Portuguese coach and the implications it could have for the team’s performance in upcoming competitions.
