Scottie Scheffler, the world number one in golf, did not hide his frustration after his defeat at the 2026 Masters, raising a controversy that promises to make headlines in the coming weeks. The American, who was in contention for the title at the legendary Augusta National Golf Course, openly criticized the “uneven firmness” of the course, an issue that may have directly influenced the outcome of the tournament.

After a final round of 68 strokes, which earned him a rise of five positions on the leaderboard, Scheffler finished alone in second place, just one stroke behind the winner Rory McIlroy, who closed the tournament with an impressive 122 under par. In a press conference, the golfer did not hold back in expressing his dissatisfaction with the course conditions, particularly regarding the variation in the firmness of the greens between the early and late days of the tournament.

“It’s not me who decides the layout of the course,” Scheffler stated, “but I would have liked the firmness to be more uniform on Thursday and Friday. I was surprised by the softness of the course on Friday afternoon, especially since the day was coming to an end. Of course, the weather also changes, and it was a bit windy on Thursday, so you never know.” The world number one acknowledged that weather conditions are part of the outdoor game, but made it clear that his performance on Friday, when he failed to score below par, seriously hurt his chances of victory.

Scheffler also explained that, despite starting the weekend twelve strokes behind the leader, he managed to make an impressive comeback to finish just one point behind McIlroy. “It was a great recovery,” he said, “but in golf, every detail matters.”

The American’s journey at the 2026 Masters was a rollercoaster: it began with an opening round of 70, followed by a drop to 74 on the second day. However, Scheffler responded with an impressive round of 65 on Saturday, before closing the tournament with a 68 on Sunday, totaling 11 under par.

This Masters comes at a time when Scheffler has shown great consistency on the PGA Tour, following his victory at the American Express at the start of the season, a tied third place at the WM Phoenix Open, and strong performances at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational.

At the top of the Masters 2026 leaderboard, Rory McIlroy stands out with a total of 122 strokes under par, followed by Scottie Scheffler in second place with 11 under. The list of top players also includes prominent names like Tyrrell Hatton, Russell Henley, Justin Rose, and Cameron Young, all tied for third place with 10 under par.

This episode raises questions about consistency and fairness in course preparation for high-level tournaments, sparking a sensitive debate that could influence future decisions regarding the organization of the Masters and other golf championships. Scheffler, with his firm voice and clear stance, promises to remain a prominent figure both on and off the course.

With the Masters 2026 now in the history books, the controversy over the “uneven firmness” of Augusta National is far from dying down, and the eyes of the golf world will be watching the repercussions this criticism may have on upcoming events.
