Coco Gauff starred in a true thriller at the Rome Stadium, securing a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Italian Open after an epic battle against rising sensation Iva Jovic. The 19-year-old American survived a match point while trailing 5-7, 3-5 in a nearly three-hour match (2h45), which swung between the dominance of both players. This dramatic victory extends her winning streak in Rome, following her eliminations of Tereza Valentova and Solana Sierra, and keeps her hopes alive of defending the 650 ranking points she earned from last year’s final.

Jovic, an emerging talent at just 18 years old and already in the top 20 worldwide, pushed Gauff to the limit, forcing moments of significant physical and psychological strain. The match was characterized by constant shifts in momentum, where the ability to stay calm while serving and withstand pressure during crucial moments proved vital. In the decisive set, the American asserted herself decisively, winning 6-2 and securing her place in the next round.

The turning point came in the second set when Gauff faced the imminent risk of elimination. “At that match point, my head was almost in the locker room, to be honest. I immediately thought, ‘I’m going to hear a lot about this,'” revealed the young star, confessing the weight of pressure and fear of defeat. However, the player managed to regain her mental control, stabilizing her game and taking advantage of Jovic’s drop in performance following the missed match point.

Gauff also explained that her recovery was not so much about tactical adjustments, but rather about mental strength. “I managed to get through that tough moment. I think she lost a bit of her level when she had the advantage, and that helped me get back into the match,” she stated, also recalling other occasions when she survived multiple match points, including a duel in Dubai against Elise Mertens. “I was thinking about that match, where I saved five or six match points, and I thought: ‘Maybe I can do the same today.’”

In the post-match interview, the American tennis player highlighted the importance of mental control and simple, direct communication with her coaching team. “My coach gave me basic advice, nothing complex, just reminders to stay focused and concentrated in moments of panic,” Gauff revealed. The young player also emphasized the value of her recent experience in doubles matches, where she faced similar extreme pressure situations. “Yesterday, in doubles, I also saved a match point in a tie-break at 13-11, and I was even more nervous than today. Maybe that experience helped me.”

This season, Coco Gauff continues to establish herself as one of the most consistent players on the WTA, with several WTA 1000 titles to her name, all won on hard courts. However, she has been solidifying her value on clay, with finals in Madrid and Rome in 2025, in addition to the historic title at Roland Garros. The 2026 campaign in Rome has been marked by impressive comebacks and a constant struggle against self-imposed pressure.

“I’m probably one of those who puts too much pressure on myself. In sports, we always want more,” confessed the young star. “Maybe with my age I will come to appreciate things more, but right now, sometimes, I put too much pressure on myself for every tournament. I want to win everything.” However, Gauff shows a growing maturity by acknowledging that it is not possible to win all the time and that the focus should be on the journey and the process. “I have taken a step back and realized that I am not going to win every tournament. I need to focus on the path and on my development.”

In the quarter-finals, Gauff will face Mirra Andreeva, who surprised Elise Mertens, promising yet another intense duel in a draw filled with balanced matches and exciting twists. The young American thus enters a decisive phase of the tournament, determined to continue her impressive run and prove that she is ready to dominate on all surfaces.
