Maja Chwalinska could not contain herself after the final of the French Open, describing Mirra Andreeva as “irritating” in a statement that is already making waves in the tennis world. The young Polish player, a surprising finalist in the tournament, lost 6-3, 6-2 to the Russian star, who became the first player born in 2005 or later to win a Grand Slam title in singles.

Chwalinska was a true warrior during the match, especially in the early moments, where her aggressive and persistent playing style managed to unsettle Andreeva, even with the wind making conditions more difficult. However, as the match progressed, the champion raised her level, dominating 10 of the last 12 games, leaving the Polish player unable to respond to her superiority.

During the trophy presentation ceremony, Chwalinska began by praising her opponent: “First of all, congratulations Mirra. You are an incredible player, so young and talented – it’s really irritating.” The Polish player did not hold back in her words to acknowledge the quality of the winner and the work of her team: “Congratulations to your team for the fantastic work, I wish you all the best for the future.”

The emotion overwhelmed the 23-year-old player as she recalled her journey to the final, which was historic, as she became the first player to qualify through the qualifying draw to reach a Grand Slam final since Emma Raducanu in 2021. On her path to Paris, Chwalinska eliminated notable names such as Maria Sakkari and seeded players Elise Mertens and Anna Kalinskaya, culminating in her victory over Diana Shnaider in the semifinals.

“ I want to thank my team and my family, who have always been with me. I know that sometimes I am not easy, but thank you for not giving up, for working with me every day. I will continue to give my best and try to improve,” said the Polish player, who received support from fans throughout the three weeks of competition. “I wish you had seen a better game today, but Mirra was just too strong. I did what I could, I apologize (laughs). Paris will always be in my heart.”

This performance earned her a significant rise in the world ranking, reaching her best-ever position at 21st place, and around 1,300 points that could boost her career. Chwalinska’s immediate future includes the Lexus Ilkley Open tournament, although it is unclear if she will rest before the grass season. If she does not receive an invitation to Wimbledon, she will have to go through the qualifying rounds for the British major.

The candid statement and surprising performance of Maja Chwalinska at the French Open promise to shake up the circuit, while Mirra Andreeva prepares to continue her meteoric rise in world tennis. A generational clash that is already marking the sport of kings.
