Aryna Sabalenka won the BNP Paribas Open title at Indian Wells in an electrifying final against Elena Rybakina. The world number one not only broke a streak of two consecutive losses to her opponent, dating back to the WTA finals and the Australian Open, but also demonstrated remarkable resilience by saving a match point in the tiebreak of the third set, triumphing with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6).

The pressure was clearly present, as Sabalenka came from a troubling history, having lost three of her last four finals in major tournaments. “I’m tired of giving up in the decisive moments,” said the Belarusian player, expressing her determination to turn this negative trend around. And that is exactly what she did in Indian Wells, a venue where she secured the 23rd title of her career and the 10th at a WTA 1000 event—a milestone surpassed only by two other players, Serena Williams (13) and Iga Swiatek (11).

The final started off challenging for Sabalenka, with Rybakina dominating the first set. The Kazakh player was incisive and managed a crucial break at 3-2, forcing Sabalenka into an unforced error. Even after a moment of pressure where Rybakina faced a 0-30 at 5-3, she was able to maintain her advantage and take the set.

The second set started disastrously for Sabalenka, who committed a double fault right from the outset. However, Rybakina’s inability to capitalize on the opportunity quickly turned into a counterattack from the Belarusian, who took control of the set with a solid display, saving two break points at critical moments.

The third set began with an early break in favor of Sabalenka, but Rybakina, showing her grit, managed to create two break opportunities at 4-3. However, Sabalenka, steady under pressure, was able to recover and stayed ahead. Tension mounted when, at 5-4, Sabalenka felt the pressure and conceded a break, allowing Rybakina to get back into contention.

At 26 years old, Sabalenka displayed an indomitable spirit by saving five break points in the next game, leading the match to a decisive tiebreak. With nerves of steel, the Belarusian closed out the tiebreak at 8-6, securing victory and celebrating an achievement that further cements her status as one of the best players of her generation.
