In a sharp analysis of the current football landscape, Portuguese coach Renato Paiva made bold statements about Portugal’s chances in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, expressing a confident outlook regarding the national team’s performance. During a conversation with the Lusa agency, Paiva emphasized that the national team is no longer viewed merely as an outsider but rather as one of the main contenders for the title, alongside powerhouses such as Argentina, Spain, and France.
“I do not see Portugal as an outsider. In the current state of the teams, without considering history, I see two tiers. I see Argentina, the current world champion and a team that has been very consistent in competing and winning, Spain, France, and Portugal. These four are in the top tier of title contenders,” stated the 56-year-old coach, underscoring the elevated status that the Portuguese national team has achieved in recent years.
Paiva also outlined a second group of teams that, while not at the same level, have the potential to surprise, mentioning Germany, England, and Brazil, now under the guidance of renowned Carlo Ancelotti. “Then I see in a second tier, based on their current form, Germany, which is always Germany, England, and Brazil, which is trying to find itself but has a very strong asset in Carlo Ancelotti, and from Ancelotti, we can expect anything,” he added.
The 2026 World Cup, which will take place from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will see Portugal in Group K, where it will face teams such as Uzbekistan, Colombia, and an opponent yet to be determined, who will emerge from the intercontinental playoff between the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jamaica, and New Caledonia.
