Sporting stumbled again in the championship, bringing FC Porto closer to the title and sparking a wave of criticism and controversy surrounding the refereeing. In the 1-1 draw against AVS SAD in Vila das Aves, Sporting’s coach Rui Borges did not hold back in his words, launching a sharp irony regarding the role of referee Pedro Ramalho. The explosive statements from the coach are set to further stir the atmosphere around the green and white club.

“We did more than enough, unfortunately we couldn’t score and ended up being harmed. That’s football, we have to keep our heads up and move on,” Rui Borges began, in a clear analysis but filled with frustration. The most controversial moment came when the coach addressed the penalty awarded to AVS SAD: “It’s the so-called green mantle, the green mantle was present here today, that’s a bit it, the green mantle was on the field. I won’t comment further,” he stated, launching a veiled attack on the refereeing and suggesting an implicit favoritism that is leaving Sporting in a delicate position in the championship.

Faced with the pressure and proximity of FC Porto in the title race, Rui Borges did not hide the difficulties faced by the squad, highlighting the physical fatigue of the players: “We have to lift our heads and follow our path. Difficult matches are normal, and we are feeling some overload. Today I had to manage the loads and the effort because it was almost mandatory. We have had enormous fatigue, a lot of overload on some players. We knew this could happen, being involved in all these competitions. It is part of football and representing a great team,” explained the coach, emphasizing the weight of the fight on multiple fronts.

Despite the draw and the criticism, Rui Borges maintained a reserved stance regarding the internal atmosphere of the club: “I’ve said this before, when I win and when I don’t win, I don’t like to enter the locker room. Sometimes it’s better to respect and move on,” he concluded, showing some pragmatism in the face of difficulties.

The refereeing by Pedro Ramalho was also the subject of analysis by experts such as Jorge Faustino and Marco Ferreira, who attempted to dissect the controversial moments of the match. The draw of Sporting against AVS SAD complicates the title race, but the lions still have chances in various sports, with trophies already won in volleyball and basketball, and decisions yet to be made in football, handball, futsal, and roller hockey. The pressure is mounting, and Rui Borges knows he will have to find solutions to prevent the “green mantle” from once again affecting his path in the Liga Betclic.
