The recent defeat of Sporting, which culminated in their elimination from the Taça da Liga, has left coach Rui Borges reflecting on the delicate situation of his team. In candid statements, he addressed the sadness caused by injuries affecting the squad, the constant pressure surrounding the club, and the urgency for a response in the upcoming challenges of the Liga and the Taça de Portugal.
“It seems that everything happens to this team and that affects the players…” Borges expressed, revealing his concern for the team’s morale. He admitted that injuries have a significant psychological impact, both on the players and the coaching staff. “It’s difficult; it’s something that even seems like a case study. For the first time, I feel this more acutely, and I believe the team feels it at some point as well. No matter how positive and optimistic we are, it hurts to see so many people sidelined with injuries that we cannot control. But it will never serve as an excuse, I say again. We could have made it 2-0; we didn’t, and the opponent believed in the dying minutes and was fortunate.”
With the possibility of Sporting falling seven points behind FC Porto, the pressure is mounting. Rui Borges did not hide his concern about how recent results might affect the team’s confidence: “The pressure at Sporting is daily. It doesn’t relate to the results; it relates to the pressure of being better and winning, that’s what we want. There’s an entire second half of the season left, and we will try to perform better in the second half than we did in the first because only then can we achieve our objectives.”
Questioned about the recurrence of injuries, Borges was clear: “It’s not the number of muscle injuries that is keeping players out. These are things we cannot control. No matter how optimistic I am, my greatest sadness is leaving here with two fewer players for the next game.”
The issue of strengthening the squad was also raised. The coach did not hesitate to state that player development remains a priority for the club, despite the difficulties. “We know that Sporting also relies on player development. And if we have to rely on them [young players from the Academy], we will do so just like last season. We also cannot go to the market no matter how many injuries we have; otherwise, in two months we will have 40 players to train.”
Regarding the atmosphere of distrust among the fans, Borges expressed understanding: “We will try to fight for everything, the league and the Taça de Portugal. There are still many games left and many points to be contested. The team in first place is having an extraordinary season. We are focused and concentrated on what we want. Distrust? It’s natural that no one is happy because this club always wants to compete for titles.”
Finally, regarding the team’s attitude, the coach remained firm: “No. The team had a good attitude. We could have made it 2-0 and we didn’t, just like against Gil Vicente, and we came away punished. We need to understand how we can better control games in the final stages, even with this normal accumulation of fatigue.”
