Morten Hjulmand is increasingly close to leaving Sporting for Atlético de Madrid, with negotiations between the two clubs reaching a fever pitch. The discussions have progressed to such an extent that the formal presentation of a new proposal is no longer necessary, with only the details remaining that could see the 27-year-old Danish midfielder's transfer reach the €40 million demanded by the Lions.
The clubs are currently focusing on the financial mechanisms that could allow Atlético to meet Sporting's desired figures. The deal may involve not only the €40 million fixed fee but also bonuses related to individual and collective sporting objectives, as well as phased payment plans and the usual solidarity mechanism. The primary goal for the Colchoneros is to secure the Danish international quickly, ideally by Monday, the date set for the Spanish team’s return to work at the start of the 2026/2027 pre-season.

According to Marca, Hjulmand's agents are already in Madrid to expedite negotiations and facilitate an agreement between the clubs. The first offer from the Spaniards, amounting to 35 million euros, was promptly rejected by Sporting president Frederico Varandas. Last week, Varandas explained: “We received an offer from Atlético Madrid and we rejected it. It is far from the value we want. We have established a fair value that reflects the player's age, position, and the fact that he has three years with Sporting. The player and the agents know what that value is. For anything below that value, the player stays.”
Atletico Madrid continues to strive to convince Frederico Varandas to finalize the deal, also relying on the commitment made last summer when the Sporting president reached an agreement with the captain for his continuation for another season, facilitating his departure in the summer of 2026, but always under the condition of 40 million euros plus bonuses. An understanding between Hjulmand and the Spanish club has existed for quite some time for a five-year contract.
Signed from Lecce in 2023 for 18 million euros, Hjulmand has a release clause of 80 million and a contract with Sporting until 2026. The plan is for the entire process to be completed by Monday. If this does not happen, Hjulmand is expected to report for duty with the lions to join the training camp in Lagos, with no intention of forcing a move or repeating the behavior of Gyokeres last season, when he refused to train during tense negotiations with Arsenal.
Expectations remain high at both clubs, with the imminent outcome promising to shake up the transfer market and the immediate future of the Danish midfielder.
