“Draper wins in Eastbourne and strengthens partnership with Andy Murray after injury.”

Jack Draper refused to give in to a wave of illness and sweltering temperatures in Eastbourne, securing his place in the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne Open with a determined victory of 7-5, 6-4 over Jack Pinnington Jones. The young Brit, who recently returned to competition after arm and knee issues, demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming any obstacles in his path towards rediscovering his best tennis.

At 22 years old, Draper achieved his second victory since returning to the courts, following a forced withdrawal in the Barcelona event due to a knee injury. Now back on grass, the tennis player admits he is not yet at the peak of his abilities but emphasizes the importance of accumulating matches and confidence at this crucial stage of the season, with Wimbledon on the immediate horizon. The Brit, who a year ago was ranked in the top 4 in the world after winning in Indian Wells and reaching the final in Madrid, saw his rise abruptly interrupted by injuries, dropping him out of the top 100 and forcing him to start almost from scratch.

The significance of this victory goes far beyond the immediate result. With Taylor Fritz withdrawing from the tournament at the last minute and only two seeded players in the draw – Ugo Humbert and Juan Manuel Cerundolo – the field in Eastbourne is completely open. Draper, now mentored by Andy Murray, finds himself with a rare opportunity to revive his career and compete again with the elite of world tennis. He himself acknowledges the importance of the moment: each match is a chance to regain rhythm, competitive stamina, and the confidence lost in recent months.

In the match against Pinnington Jones, Draper started strong, controlling the first set with an early break. However, the opponent managed to save a set point and equalized at 5-5, forcing Draper to react immediately with another break and finally close out the set on his serve. From there, the former US Open semi-finalist went on a streak of four consecutive games, establishing a comfortable lead in the second set. Despite wasting a chance for a double break, he maintained control and sealed the victory on his third match point, ensuring a showdown with Gabriel Diallo in the quarter-finals of a tournament that could very well favor him.

Health concerns did not go unnoticed. Draper revealed after the match that “I had a slight upset, a sort of stomach virus, so I was battling a bit with that.” Nevertheless, he downplayed the use of a compression sleeve on his left arm, clarifying: “I’ve always used a sleeve for sweat because otherwise I sweat a lot and the grip gets ruined very quickly. It had nothing to do with the arm injury,” he stated, expressing satisfaction at enduring the challenges posed by both the heat and his discomfort.

Regarding the fact that Andy Murray is in the stands and in the role of mentor, Draper did not hold back in praising the Scot, who has been a constant and motivating presence behind the scenes of his return. “When he stepped onto the court, people noticed, and there was immediately some buzz – I don’t know if he likes that so much,” Draper commented, clearly proud of the support from the three-time Grand Slam champion. “Andy is a legend, so everyone loves to see him. It’s really good to have that support. He loves being involved in tennis again. It’s truly his passion, competing and feeling the atmosphere of tennis. I think Andy is the ultimate competitor, and the more I spend time with him, the more I see that he really enjoys being back on the circuit, which is great for me and for him. It’s really good to have him cheering me on.”

The absence of clear favorites in the Eastbourne tournament opens an exciting path for Draper, who could face Ugo Humbert or Quentin Halys in the semifinals if he overcomes Gabriel Diallo. The Briton views this event as the perfect rehearsal for Wimbledon, a tournament where he has never advanced past the second round and whose edition last year marked the beginning of his physical problems, with a surprising defeat against Marin Cilic. This year, with the support of Andy Murray, solid preparation, and renewed motivation, Draper believes he can finally make the leap at SW19. With the Grand Slam in London starting on June 29, the coming days will be crucial to determine if the young Brit is ready to surprise the tennis world once again.
