“Jannik Sinner’s health confession raises doubts about Wimbledon.”

Alarm at Wimbledon: Jannik Sinner, the current champion of the tournament, left fans on edge by admitting that his recent health issues could recur, raising doubts about his physical condition for the remainder of the competition and reviving memories of his unexpected collapse at Roland Garros. Even after two hard-fought victories at the start of his title defense, the Italian was unable to allay concerns, openly stating that “it can happen again.”

Jannik Sinner began his title defense campaign at Wimbledon with evident difficulties, needing five sets to overcome Miomir Kecmanovic in his opening match of the tournament. In his second encounter, against Portuguese player Nuno Borges, Sinner won in three sets, but the score does not reflect the challenges faced, particularly in the first two sets, both of which were decided only in a tie-break. The high temperatures in London, far from providing comfort, only served to rekindle concerns about the physical endurance of the Italian number one, who had already shown vulnerabilities under similar conditions at the last French Open.

The drama in Paris is still fresh in the minds of tennis fans. Sinner seemed to have everything under control against Juan Manuel Cerundolo, serving to close the match at 5-3 in the third set, but suddenly found himself without energy, ultimately being eliminated in a surprising five-set match. The turnaround was shocking: Sinner lost the last two sets by a resounding 6-1, fueling speculation about his true physical condition and ability to withstand the demands of the big stage.

After the episode at Roland Garros, the tennis player revealed that he felt unwell on the morning of the decisive match and that, on his team's advice, he underwent several medical examinations after leaving Paris. Although he received the green light to compete, Sinner acknowledged in statements to the Italian press, following his victory over Borges, that the issue may not be fully resolved: “Yes, we understand [what happened]. It can happen again because, in the end, you don't find a solution just like that; it's a somewhat broader issue. But yes, it can happen again. We are doing everything to prevent it from recurring, but if it happens again, then we will understand that perhaps the path is not the right one. We'll see,” said the player, displaying a rare frankness among the leading title contenders.

Sinner also detailed that, before the last match, he woke up feeling “not very well,” although he attributed the discomfort to a fall he suffered the day before. “Today I was referring to a more general physical recovery because yesterday I woke up and my body wasn't feeling very well. But that was because of the fall. Then, on the court, I felt good, so I can be calm,” he explained, trying to reassure fans but not hiding his uncertainty.

For now, Sinner has secured his place in the third round of Wimbledon, where he will face American Jenson Brooksby. Despite the uncertainties, he remains ambitious and critical: “You can't always play perfectly. In my opinion, I served very well. It was difficult to respond, and when you don't have much rhythm, it's also complicated to play good tennis when the points are prolonged,” he analyzed, before highlighting the quality of his Portuguese opponent: “He pressured well, even with his forehand, and made few mistakes. Perhaps he hesitated a bit in certain decisions. But then I managed to be a bit more aggressive. I will talk to the team to better prepare for the next match.”

Sinner's words create an atmosphere of uncertainty at Wimbledon, making the tournament even more unpredictable and “open,” as former British tennis player John Lloyd recently argued, emphasizing that the Italian “may not be at 100%.” With Novak Djokovic displaying great form and several outsiders looking to cause surprises, Sinner's health could be the decisive factor in the outcome of the event. The coming days will be crucial to determine whether the defending champion can overcome physical challenges and stay in the race for the most prestigious trophy in world tennis.
