Colombia exited in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout against Switzerland. The match, held at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, ended in a goalless draw after 120 minutes, leaving everything to be decided from the penalty spot, where Switzerland ultimately prevailed 4-3.
Néstor Lorenzo, Colombia's coach, expressed frustration at the lack of offensive effectiveness from his team after the match, despite the high number of shots taken. “We lacked goals. We knew it would be a very tight, tactical, and balanced game. In any case, we deserved a bit more in the 90 minutes for our intentions and the shots we took. As the match progressed, both teams lost energy, which led to the penalties,” said Lorenzo, visibly disappointed with the outcome.

The Colombian coach acknowledged that offensive inefficiency has been a recurring problem, not only in this match but also during the qualifiers: “The lack of goals has affected us quite a bit at certain moments. I remember some qualifying matches where we struggled to score; we created opportunities, and the ball simply wouldn’t go in. I’m interested in seeing the team play well and create opportunities. We had 17 shots, which is a lot. Since we didn’t convert, we paid the price.”
Confronted with criticism regarding the performances of forwards Luis Díaz and Luis Suárez, Néstor Lorenzo was emphatic in defending his players: “They score and are goal scorers in their leagues. There is nothing to criticize. Sometimes the ball goes in. Other times, it doesn’t. That also depends on the opposing goalkeepers, and this tournament has shown us impressive quality in that position.”
Colombian forward Luis Suárez did not hide his disappointment at the result but emphasized his pride in the team's journey in this competition. “It’s a sad day. This team, this national selection, and this country were destined for better things. We made it to this stage, and I want to thank the entire country and the people who filled every stadium where we played. We hope this will be a significant turning point because we must look at what this country and this selection showed in this competition with a positive perspective, even though there will always be that sad side,” Suárez declared after the elimination.
The elimination on penalties leaves a bitter taste for the Colombian national team, which demonstrated quality and ambition but ultimately paid the price for a lack of effectiveness in front of the opposing goal.
