Cristiano Ronaldo is once again in the spotlight as he prepares to face Spain in a clash that promises to ignite the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The match between Portugal and Spain, scheduled for Monday at the Dallas Atrium, is being anticipated as one of the most high-profile games of the tournament, rekindling a historic rivalry between the Iberian neighbors. But what has Ronaldo's journey against 'La Roja' been like throughout his international career?

The Portuguese forward faced Spain for the first time at the Euro held on home soil when he was just 19 years old. Portugal and Spain met in the group stage after the Portuguese team lost their opening match against Greece. Needing a win to secure progression, Portugal triumphed 1-0 thanks to a goal from Nuno Gomes in the 57th minute. Ronaldo was on the pitch for 85 minutes but did not score or assist.

The reunion took place at the 2010 World Cup, at a time when Spain was making significant strides towards winning its first title. After finishing in different positions in their respective groups, Portugal and Spain faced each other in the round of 16. Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes but watched as David Villa scored the only goal of the match in the 63rd minute, leading to Portugal's elimination. Interestingly, all the knockout matches won by Spain in that World Cup ended with the same scoreline: 1-0.

Two years later, at Euro 2012, Portugal faced Spain again, this time in the semi-finals. The match, held at the Donbas Arena, ended in a goalless draw after 120 minutes. Ronaldo, who played the entire match, was designated to take the fifth penalty in the shootout but did not get to the penalty spot, as João Moutinho and Bruno Alves missed their attempts, eliminating Portugal before the captain could intervene.

At the 2018 World Cup, Ronaldo responded to critics and had one of the most memorable nights of his international career against Spain. The two countries opened Group B at the Olympic Stadium in Sochi, and Ronaldo scored a spectacular hat-trick. First, he won and converted a penalty against David de Gea, then capitalized on a mistake by the Spanish goalkeeper to score again. Finally, with Portugal trailing, he scored an impeccable free kick to equalize. Despite the draw, Spain topped the group due to a higher number of goals scored, leading Portugal to face Uruguay in the round of 16, where they were eliminated.

The rivalry continued in the Nations League, where Ronaldo came on as a substitute in the final minutes of the first encounter, unable to prevent a 1-0 defeat following Álvaro Morata's goal. In the return match, the captain played the full 90 minutes, but Portugal lost again by the same scoreline.

Both teams reached the Nations League finals in 2025, meeting again in a match decided, once more, by penalties. Ronaldo opened the scoring for Portugal and equalized the result, but he was substituted in the 88th minute and did not participate in the shootout. Nonetheless, the Portuguese national team emerged victorious, claiming the trophy.

Ronaldo's history against Spain is marked by intense duels, decisive goals, and moments of frustration, proving the magnitude of this rivalry in world football. The reunion between the two national teams in Dallas promises to uphold the tradition of great matches, with the Portuguese captain seeking yet another chapter of glory in his international career.
