The Premier League has once again established itself as the most powerful football league in the world, achieving a record £6.8 billion in revenue during the 2024/25 season, a figure that represents more than double the revenues generated by any other major European leagues. The data was released in the latest edition of the Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance, confirming that the English competition continues to widen its lead over La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1.

The 8% growth in revenue was driven by the strong performance of English clubs in UEFA competitions, following changes introduced to the formats of the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. This trend is expected to continue into the next season, with revenues anticipated to surpass the £7 billion mark for the first time in 2025/26, benefiting from the implementation of a new television contract and the presence of three English clubs in European finals.

Commercial revenues remain the primary financial driver of the Premier League. This segment recorded a 13% growth, reaching £2.4 billion throughout the season. The so-called “big six” — Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur — were responsible for 73% of that figure, once again demonstrating the immense commercial strength of the biggest brands in English football.

Matchday revenues also set a new all-time high. The increase of £133 million, corresponding to a growth of 15%, allowed the total to surpass the £1 billion mark in ticket sales for the first time. This growth was driven by rising ticket prices, the expansion of capacity at several stadiums, and the high number of English clubs reaching the later stages of European competitions. Revenues from broadcasting rights grew by 2%, reaching £3.4 billion, further consolidating the Premier League's position as the most-watched football competition worldwide.

Despite the enormous capacity to generate revenue, English clubs continue to face significant financial challenges. Pre-tax losses increased from £135 million in 2023/24 to £948 million in the previous season, as a result of high investment in transfers and a reduction in extraordinary revenues from player sales. The net debt of the clubs also rose, reaching £3.6 billion at the end of the season.

The gap to other European leagues has never been so pronounced.

A La Liga recorded revenues of €4.1 billion (approximately £3.5 billion), representing an annual growth of 9%, but still just over half the amount achieved by the Premier League. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona alone accounted for 52% of the total revenue of the Spanish league, with €1.2 billion and €975 million, respectively.

The Serie A increased its revenues by 4%, reaching €3 billion (approximately £2.56 billion). Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan represented 45% of that total. Matchday revenues grew by 3%, reaching €500 million, driven by the strong performances of the top Italian clubs in the Champions League.

In contrast, Ligue 1 experienced a significant decline. Total revenues fell by 15%, settling at €2.2 billion (around £1.88 billion) during the 2024/25 season. The reduction in commercial revenues, estimated at €400 million, ultimately offset the growth seen in television and matchday revenues, highlighting the financial difficulties that continue to affect French football.

In the combined five major European leagues, pre-tax losses rose to €1.5 billion (approximately £1.28 billion) in 2024/25, compared to €0.8 billion (around £0.68 billion) recorded in the previous season.

The data thus confirms the absolute financial dominance of the Premier League, which continues to strengthen its position as the most profitable football competition in the world and redefine the economic landscape of European football.
