Rúben Amorim has taken the helm of AC Milan with disarming honesty and renewed ambition, following his notable stint at Manchester United. The Portuguese coach, who was introduced as the new manager of the Rossoneri this week, did not hide his pride in his journey at Old Trafford, even while acknowledging the mistakes made during his time in England.
Amorim left Manchester United in January of this year after 14 months in charge, having been replaced by Michael Carrick. At the time of his departure, the Red Devils were in sixth place in the Premier League, ultimately finishing third under Carrick's management—a turnaround that few believed was possible during Amorim's tenure.
At his presentation in Milan, Amorim candidly reflected on his experience in Manchester. “The first thing is that it’s difficult to explain the mistakes; I would have to explain the entire context. I learned, and I learned a lot. I made mistakes, but I am proud to have managed Manchester United. Now, that’s part of the past,” said the Portuguese coach, appearing thoughtful and determined. “There are many things I can do better today; I gained experience. I think everyone learns from their own experiences. There are things I would like to change and others that never change. I am sure that I am a better coach today,” Amorim stated, emphasizing his personal and professional growth.
Regarding the challenge he now faces, Amorim did not hide the demands of his new role: “It’s a great challenge. After the last time (at Manchester United), I told myself to choose less demanding challenges, and yet here I am, facing an even greater challenge.” AC Milan, a club that has won Serie A only twice since 2004, is heavily investing in renewal and has already secured the multimillion-euro signing of Gonçalo Ramos, a reinforcement that arrives just in time for the start of the Amorim era.
With high expectations and a raised bar, Rúben Amorim arrives in Italian football acknowledging the weight of recent history but determined to write a new chapter of success. His self-criticism and humility suggest a more mature coach, ready to face the pressure of returning Milan to the top of Serie A.
