The situation at Chelsea has just become even more complicated. The team’s captain, Reece James, is set to be a significant absentee after suffering a thigh tendon injury that may be more serious than initially expected. Liam Rosenior, the coach, confirmed that the player will be sidelined for several weeks, a tough blow for a team already facing significant challenges.
James, who recently signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea, has been enjoying an outstanding season, excelling both as a right-back and in midfield. The England international has contributed two goals and six assists across all competitions, becoming a key pillar in the team’s structure. However, his career has been marred by injuries that have frequently kept him off the pitch, and now it seems he may miss a large part of the final sprint of the season.
After the 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle, which followed a heavy 5-2 loss in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain, James did not participate in Monday’s training. The team is now preparing to overturn the deficit in the Champions League tie, and James’ absence only adds to the pressure. During the pre-match press conference, Rosenior did not hide the seriousness of the situation: “Reece felt something in his hamstring at the end of the game against Newcastle. We don’t know the full extent of the injury, but he will be out for tomorrow’s game. It could be serious. With a hamstring injury, it’s never good. We hope to conduct scans and find out the true extent of the problem.”
James’ absence could not come at a worse time for the Blues. In addition to trying to keep their European hopes alive, the team is still in the running for the FA Cup and faces a tough battle with Liverpool and Aston Villa for a spot in the next edition of the Champions League. Currently, Chelsea is one point behind Liverpool, who sit in fifth place, and two points behind Aston Villa, who are in fourth place.
The upcoming challenges for Chelsea are crucial:
– Paris Saint-Germain (home) – March 17
– Everton (away) – March 21
– Port Value (home, FA Cup quarter-finals) – April 4

– Brighton (away) – April 26
– Nottingham Forest (home) – May 2
– Liverpool (away) – May 9
– Tottenham (home) – May 17
– Sunderland (away) – May 24
With three of the eight remaining league games against top 6 teams, Chelsea finds itself in a critical phase of the season, where it cannot afford to have its best players sidelined. James’ injury, at a time when the team has dropped valuable points, could be seen as a significant turning point in this troubled season for the Blues.
