Rafael Jodar, the young prodigy of Spanish tennis at just 19 years old, continues to make headlines not only for his brilliant performances at Roland Garros but also for the controversies surrounding him off the court. After qualifying for yet another historic semi-final by defeating Pablo Carreño Busta in an epic five-set match, Jodar is once again under fire for an incident that has divided opinions: he allegedly ignored a ball girl as he entered the court.
The tennis player, who has been receiving praise for his technique and physical endurance, is facing criticism following an incident that occurred moments before his latest match. While players typically walk side by side with the ball girls, Jodar chose to disregard the presence of his companion on Court Suzanne Lenglen, walking alone to his position and leaving the young girl watching him, without the traditional gesture of courtesy that the protocol demands. The girl eventually followed him, but the Spaniard’s attitude caused discomfort among fans and commentators.
This is not the first controversial episode involving Jodar and the ball girls. In his previous match against Alex Michelsen, videos circulated showing him seemingly pushing a ball girl as he exited the court. Later, he vehemently denied this version during a press conference: “She was walking backwards, I didn’t push her. I was asking my dad to hand me my things after the break to go to the bathroom. She was in the way, tried to get out of the way, and ended up falling, but it wasn’t because of me,” explained the Spanish tennis player, attempting to dispel suspicions of misconduct.
This type of behavior begins to tarnish Jodar’s image, who until now has been celebrated as one of the greatest promises of the new generation of world tennis. The comparison with similar cases, such as that of Italian Luciano Darderi at the Masters in Rome, who also ignored a ball girl but quickly apologized publicly, does not work in his favor.
Despite the controversies off the court, Rafael Jodar remains focused on the competition. With an impressive performance on clay, the young Spaniard secured a place in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros, where he will face Alexander Zverev, the world number three. This will be a decisive battle that could determine the true contender for the title in this edition of the French Grand Slam.
While the controversy continues to circulate on social media and in the media, Jodar’s talent and determination on the court demonstrate that, for now, nothing distracts him from his main objective: to triumph in Paris and establish himself as a rising star in world tennis. However, the way he manages relationships and protocol off the court may prove to be as important as his sporting qualities for his long-term career.
