Carlos Cordeiro, one of the advisors to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, has submitted his immediate resignation, marking the beginning of a significant crisis within the organization. The reason? The controversial proposal to create a commercial entity that would allow private investors to enter FIFA. Cordeiro's decision, who has Portuguese ancestry, reflects the growing internal opposition to the initiative since it was announced.

The proposal in question involves the establishment of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a new entity that would be responsible for managing all of FIFA's commercial and event activities, including the men's and women's World Cups, as well as the Club World Cup. FIFA has assured that private investors would only hold a minority stake, but the idea has generated an uproar. The organization estimates that the initiative could bring in up to $4.2 billion (approximately €3.66 billion), with a total valuation of $20 billion (€17.4 billion). This amount could allow for a significant increase in funds allocated to the 211 member federations, rising from the current $8 million (€7 million) to $20 million (€17.4 million) in the 2027 to 2030 cycle.

Cordeiro was clear in his opposition to the proposal, stating on the social network LinkedIn: “Let me be clear: I had no involvement in this proposal and I categorically oppose it. It is bad for FIFA's member federations, bad for football, and bad for the future of the sport in the long term.” This statement underscores the seriousness of the situation, not only for FIFA but also for sport in general.

Resistance to the proposal has come from various fronts, with UEFA, representing 55 European federations, threatening a boycott of FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, if the plan goes ahead. CONCACAF, which encompasses 41 federations from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, has also opposed the idea. In contrast, the African Football Confederation (CAF) has taken a less critical stance, encouraging its members to consider the proposal carefully.

Carlos Cordeiro, who was one of the most prominent leaders in football and worked at FIFA for over five years, now leaves a significant void. He also served on the White House task force for preparations for the 2025 Club World Cup and the 2026 World Cup, having been appointed to that position by Donald Trump. His departure could have profound repercussions on the internal dynamics of FIFA and the future of its commercial proposals. With opposition growing and pressure increasing, the future of the FIFA Forward Enterprise remains uncertain.
