“Arsenal considers mandatory rest for World Cup stars.”

The management of the return of Arsenal players who participated in the World Cup could be crucial for the defense of the title in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta knows that in elite football, the smallest details make a difference, and the mandatory rest after major international competitions is one of those critical factors.

According to FIFA regulations, players are entitled to a minimum rest period of 21 days after an international tournament. Therefore, the footballers who compete in the World Cup final on Sunday should only return to the club on August 10, just six days before the Community Shield match. This situation forces Arteta to consider difficult decisions that may harm the team in the short term but bring benefits in the medium and long term.

The Spanish coach relies on a team of sports scientists and doctors who closely monitor the physical and mental condition of the players. Even before the trip to the World Cup, it was already known that many athletes were physically exhausted from the previous season. Bukayo Saka, for example, had his minutes managed by the England team, which confirmed suspicions that he was not at 100% and would have missed the last matches had trophies not been at stake. Declan Rice revealed this month that he is suffering from chronic nerve pain between his back and upper thigh, and some believe that the midfielder's recent illness was a consequence of the extreme fatigue he has been subjected to.

In the past, a preseason start without Saliba, Rice, and Saka would have been a serious setback for Arsenal's ambitions, as they are key players in the squad. However, with the reopening of the Premier League on August 21 and the demanding schedule ahead, it may be preferable to have these players refreshed, even if it means starting the season with less competitive rhythm.

Arteta is well aware of this reality, having been the captain of Arsenal when Arsène Wenger opted to give more than three weeks of rest between the end of international commitments and the start of the domestic season. The Frenchman trusted the specialists who recommended a month of break to ensure recovery. This decision had an immediate impact, as they lost in the first match of the 2016-17 season against Liverpool, without names like Alexis Sánchez, Mesut Özil, Olivier Giroud, and Laurent Koscielny on the field—not due to injury, but due to lack of rest.

If Arteta follows this same line, the players will still have time to train before the first game of the Premier League, although with little time for complete preparation. The question arises whether it is worth giving players like Rice an extended break to recharge, even if it costs some points at the start of the season. For the coach, managing the available resources is crucial, and protecting the well-being of the athletes may be the key to ensuring a successful long-term season.

This approach raises an important debate: should Arteta prioritize the fitness of his key players, even if it means a slower start to the league? The decision could define Arsenal's path in their title defense.
